How London companies use business hire purchase

Asset finance in the capital covers a wider spread of kit than almost anywhere else. Construction contractors on refurbishment jobs need compact plant, scaffolding and access equipment; Soho and Fitzrovia production houses need cameras, grading suites and storage arrays; restaurant groups need combination ovens and walk-in refrigeration. Rather than draining cash, a company can spread the cost over one to seven years through hire purchase, where it owns the item at the end, or a lease, where it simply pays to use it. Because the equipment itself is the main security, other business assets usually remain free. Amounts from about £5,000 to £1 million are possible, and both new and used items can often be funded. Lenders will want a supplier quote, recent accounts and bank statements, and may ask directors for a personal guarantee on larger or specialist items.

Typical examples

Where it helps in London

  • 01

    Post-production workstations

A Soho editing house leases high-spec workstations and storage on a three-year term so it can upgrade as client formats change.

  • 02

    Compact plant for refurbishment work

A south London building contractor buys mini-diggers and powered access equipment on hire purchase to take on basement and extension projects.

  • 03

    Commercial kitchen fit-out

A restaurant group opening in Shoreditch spreads the cost of ovens, refrigeration and extraction instead of paying the supplier upfront.

The process

How it works

  1. 01

    Choose your asset

Select the new or used equipment or vehicle you need, and get a quote or invoice from the supplier.

  2. 02

    Tell us what you need

Complete our 60-second eligibility check (it won’t affect your credit score), then share the asset details. We match you with lenders that fund that type of asset.

  3. 03

    Lender assesses the deal

The lender reviews the asset, its expected resale value and your business, and runs its own credit checks. It may ask for a deposit, extra information or a director’s personal guarantee.

  4. 04

Supplier is paid, you use the asset

Once you sign, the lender pays the supplier and you make fixed monthly payments while the asset works for your business.

Why London builders and studios buy equipment on hire purchase

  1. Construction is one of the capital's biggest users of plant. London's construction workforce stood at 368,120 in 2025, and CITB expects the region's output to grow by an average of 1.8% a year between 2026 and 2030. Contractors winning that work often need extra mini-diggers, access platforms or site welfare units, and hire purchase lets them add kit as contracts arrive rather than paying for it all upfront.

  2. London is also the UK's creative and digital centre. GLA Economics counted around 93,300 creative industries businesses in London in 2022, and the capital held 30% of the UK's IT, software and computer services businesses. Edit suites, cameras, servers and studio lighting lose value quickly, so spreading the cost over the working life of the equipment helps keep cash free for staff and freelancers.

  3. Tax treatment is another reason companies choose hire purchase. Companies can claim full expensing on qualifying new main-rate plant and machinery, and since 1 January 2026 a new 40% first-year allowance also covers main-rate assets, including those bought for leasing. Assets on hire purchase are generally treated as bought for capital allowances, although cars are excluded from full expensing. Your accountant can confirm what applies to your company.

Business Hire Purchase in London: questions

Can a London media company finance used camera and editing equipment?

Often, yes. Many lenders will fund used equipment if it has a clear resale value and comes from a reputable dealer or seller, with an invoice and serial numbers. Older or highly specialised kit may attract shorter terms or need a larger deposit, and the lender decides how much it will advance against each item.

Should a London construction firm choose hire purchase or leasing for plant?

Hire purchase usually suits plant you expect to keep for its working life, because ownership passes to the company once the final payment is made. Leasing can suit equipment you plan to replace regularly or only need for a run of contracts. Your accountant can advise on the tax treatment of each before you decide.

Our London restaurant is in leased premises. Can we still finance kitchen equipment?

Usually, yes. Ovens, refrigeration and dishwashers that can be removed are commonly funded on hire purchase. Items built into the building, such as ductwork or fixed extraction, are harder because they may become the landlord's property. Some lenders ask for a landlord's waiver confirming they can recover the equipment if needed.

Can a London events or staging company finance equipment that travels to venues and abroad?

It is often possible, but tell lenders upfront. Lighting rigs, LED walls and audio kit that move between venues or go overseas need suitable insurance, and some lenders limit how long assets can stay outside the UK. Clear asset registers and serial numbers make the application more straightforward.

Can a London architecture LLP include software and installation costs in a hire purchase agreement?

Hardware such as workstations, plotters and servers is usually straightforward. Software licences, installation and training have little resale value, so lenders often cap how much of the total these soft costs can make up, or fund them separately. Sharing a full supplier quote at the start helps a lender say what it can cover.
