How Liverpool companies use business hire purchase
The equipment that keeps goods moving through the Port of Liverpool is only part of the story. Warehouses along the Dock Road and at distribution parks across the city region rely on forklifts, reach trucks, racking and conveyor systems; automotive component suppliers in the south of the city need presses and robotic cells; and food and drink manufacturers invest regularly in packaging lines. Asset finance lets a limited company spread the cost of this equipment over one to seven years through hire purchase or leasing, with the asset normally acting as security. Amounts run from about £5,000 to £1,000,000 and, for standard equipment from established suppliers, lenders can sometimes decide within a few days. Equipment you already own can also be refinanced to release cash. We help companies on both sides of the Mersey compare lenders remotely.

Why Merseyside manufacturers use hire purchase
Manufacturing is a bigger part of the Liverpool City Region economy than many people expect. Advanced manufacturing produced £3.0 billion of output in 2023 and employed about 22,000 people, at roughly £137,000 of output per job. Manufactured goods, led by chemicals and by machinery and transport equipment, make up close to 70% of the value of the region's goods exports, about £4 billion.
That output depends on expensive equipment. JLR announced a £500 million investment in 2024 to prepare its Halewood plant to build electric SUVs alongside its current models, and suppliers in its chain often need presses, robotic cells and test rigs to win and keep that work. The Liverpool City Region Freeport, given final government approval in January 2023, is aimed at advanced manufacturing, biomanufacturing, logistics and low carbon industries. Hire purchase lets a limited company spread the cost of new machinery over several years, with the equipment itself usually acting as security, so cash stays free for materials and wages.
Tax relief can help too. Assets on hire purchase are generally treated as bought for capital allowances, so companies can usually claim full expensing (100%) on qualifying new main-rate plant and machinery, and from 1 January 2026 a new permanent 40% first-year allowance also covers main-rate assets bought for leasing. Your accountant can confirm how this applies to your business.

Business Hire Purchase in Liverpool: questions
Can a Liverpool warehouse operator finance racking as well as forklifts?
Often, yes. Many lenders will fund pallet racking, mezzanines and conveyors for warehouses around the docks and the city region's distribution parks, but fixed systems are harder to remove and resell, so some lenders ask for a deposit or offer a shorter term. Forklifts, reach trucks and other mobile handling equipment are usually easier to fund. Lenders decide case by case, subject to status.
We supply parts to the Halewood car plant. Can hire purchase fund tooling for a new model?
It can, but tooling made for one customer's parts has little resale value, so lenders treat it more cautiously than general-purpose machinery. They may ask for a larger deposit, a shorter term or evidence of the supply contract. Pairing the tooling with standard equipment such as CNC machines or robots in one application can sometimes help. Each lender makes its own decision.
Can hire purchase cover machinery we import through the Port of Liverpool?
Yes, lenders regularly fund imported equipment, though they will want to know the supplier, the delivery terms and when the asset arrives. Some will pay a supplier deposit before shipping, while others only pay on delivery and installation. VAT and import duty are usually handled separately from the finance. Raising these details early helps avoid delays at the quayside.
Can a food manufacturer on Merseyside finance second-hand packaging machinery?
Used equipment can usually be financed, as long as lenders are comfortable with its age, condition and value. For older or specialist lines they may ask for a professional valuation or an inspection, and the term may be shorter than for new kit. Buying from an established used-equipment dealer rather than a private sale often makes the process simpler.
Could our Merseyside factory release cash from machinery we already own?
Asset refinance lets a limited company, LLP or partnership of four or more partners raise funds against equipment it owns outright or has nearly paid off. The amount typically depends on the equipment's current market value and condition, and the company then repays over an agreed term. It is often used to fund a new contract or a move to bigger premises, subject to status.
