How London companies use vehicle & fleet finance

Vans are the working backbone of London's trades, couriers and facilities firms, and running them in the capital brings costs few other cities have. The Ultra Low Emission Zone now covers all London boroughs, so plenty of electrical, plumbing and building contractors have been replacing older diesel vans with compliant or electric models. Vehicle finance lets a limited company spread that outlay across one to seven years through hire purchase, finance lease or contract hire, keeping cash for materials and wages. Single vans, mixed fleets and specialist bodies such as tippers, refrigerated units and dropsides can all be considered, with the vehicle itself usually acting as security. Lenders will usually want a vehicle quote, recent accounts and bank statements, and you can handle the whole process with us by phone.

Typical examples

Where it helps in London

  • 01

    Replacing non-compliant vans

A north London electrical contractor replaces four older diesel vans with ULEZ-compliant models on hire purchase to avoid daily charges.

  • 02

    Electric fleet for last-mile delivery

A courier company serving central London moves part of its fleet to electric vans on contract hire, with maintenance built into the rental.

  • 03

Refrigerated vans for a food wholesaler

A catering supplier in Park Royal adds two refrigerated vans to serve restaurant customers across west London.

The process

How it works

  1. 01

    Pick your vehicles

Choose the vehicles you need from a dealer or supplier and get a quote, including any modifications.

  2. 02

    Compare finance options

We look at hire purchase, finance lease and contract hire across suitable lenders and explain the trade-offs.

  3. 03

    Approval and paperwork

The lender checks the vehicles, runs credit checks on the company and its directors, and assesses affordability. Younger companies may be asked for a deposit or a director’s personal guarantee.

  4. 04

    Take delivery

Once the company signs, the lender pays the dealer, you take delivery and the company makes fixed monthly payments over the agreed term.

Running vans in London: ULEZ, the Congestion Charge and fleet finance

  1. Charging zones shape vehicle choices in the capital more than anywhere else in the UK. The Ultra Low Emission Zone now covers all London boroughs and runs every day except Christmas Day, with a £12.50 daily charge for vans up to 3.5 tonnes that do not meet its standards. From 2 January 2026 the central Congestion Charge rose to £18 a day, the 100% Cleaner Vehicle Discount ended, and electric vans and HGVs registered on Auto Pay now receive a 50% discount. For trades and couriers working in zone 1 every day, those costs add up quickly, which is why many look at replacing older vans on finance.

  2. Charging is easier to find in London than elsewhere. As of 1 July 2026 London had 345.1 public EV chargers per 100,000 residents, the highest of any UK region, although most are standard on-street units and rapid chargers are scarcer. Running costs still matter: in the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry's Q3 2026 survey, 55% of businesses reported higher fuel costs.

  3. On tax, vans can qualify for full expensing as main-rate plant and machinery, while cars are excluded, and vehicles on hire purchase are generally treated as bought for capital allowances.

Vehicle & Fleet Finance in London: questions

Can a London trade business finance electric vans?

Yes, most vehicle finance providers fund electric vans through hire purchase, finance lease or contract hire. Terms depend on the vehicle, its expected resale value and the company's finances. With most London public chargers being slower on-street units, it is worth planning depot or home charging, which may need to be funded separately.

Can we finance a used van that meets ULEZ standards?

Lenders will often finance used vans within their age and mileage limits. Checking that the vehicle meets the ULEZ emissions standard before you buy is your responsibility rather than the lender's, so use the TfL vehicle checker with the registration first. A van that is compliant today may still be worth less in a few years as standards and demand change.

How do the 2026 Congestion Charge changes affect which vans we should finance?

If your vans enter central London most weekdays, the daily charge is now a real running cost for every vehicle, electric or not. Electric vans registered on Auto Pay receive a 50% discount, so the saving can help offset a higher purchase price. It is worth comparing total monthly cost, including charges, rather than the finance payment alone.

Can a London company finance depot charge points alongside its electric vans?

Sometimes. Some lenders will include charge points in the same agreement as the vans, while others treat them as a separate asset finance deal because they are fixed to the premises. If you lease your yard or unit, the lender may ask for the landlord's consent before funding equipment installed there.

Do lenders finance HGVs for London construction and waste firms?

Yes, HGV finance is widely available for tippers, grab lorries and skip loaders, new or used. In London, lorries over 12 tonnes need a Direct Vision Standard safety permit and must meet Low Emission Zone rules, so lenders and buyers both check compliance. Vehicles that cannot operate in London tend to have lower resale value, which can affect terms.
