How Birmingham companies use business hire purchase

The West Midlands still makes things, and making things needs machinery. Tier-two and tier-three suppliers to the automotive and aerospace industries across Birmingham and the Black Country rely on CNC machining centres, press brakes, laser cutters, injection moulding machines and inspection equipment that can cost six figures each. Asset finance lets an engineering company spread that cost over one to seven years, often matched to the length of a supply contract, with the machine itself acting as security. Hire purchase gives ownership at the end, while leasing can suit technology that is upgraded regularly. Amounts from about £5,000 to £1 million are available, and used machines from reputable dealers can often be funded. We work with Midlands manufacturers remotely; a supplier quote, spec sheet and recent accounts are usually what a lender asks for first.

Typical examples

Where it helps in Birmingham

  • 01

Five-axis CNC for a new contract

A precision engineering firm in Aston buys a five-axis machining centre on hire purchase, with the term matched to a three-year component supply agreement.

  • 02

    Laser cutter for a fabricator

A sheet-metal fabricator in Smethwick replaces an ageing plasma table with a fibre laser, spreading payments so cash stays available for steel.

  • 03

    Inspection equipment for quality control

An automotive parts supplier in Castle Bromwich leases a coordinate measuring machine required by a major customer’s quality standards.

The process

How it works

  1. 01

    Choose your asset

Select the new or used equipment or vehicle you need, and get a quote or invoice from the supplier.

  2. 02

    Tell us what you need

Complete our 60-second eligibility check (it won’t affect your credit score), then share the asset details. We match you with lenders that fund that type of asset.

  3. 03

    Lender assesses the deal

The lender reviews the asset, its expected resale value and your business, and runs its own credit checks. It may ask for a deposit, extra information or a director’s personal guarantee.

  4. 04

Supplier is paid, you use the asset

Once you sign, the lender pays the supplier and you make fixed monthly payments while the asset works for your business.

Why Birmingham manufacturers use hire purchase

  1. Manufacturing supports around 273,000 jobs across the West Midlands and contributes about £22 billion a year. Within Birmingham itself, manufacturing output reached about £2.4 billion in 2023, up 3.7% on the year before, and the sector employed about 28,500 people in the city in 2024. Much of that work is machining, pressing, fabrication and finishing for automotive, aerospace and construction customers, and the equipment involved is expensive.

  2. Demand is picking up but investment is cautious. In the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce survey for the second quarter of 2026, the manufacturing domestic sales balance rose 20 points to 70, while the balance for investment in plant and machinery fell to 44, its lowest since the third quarter of 2025. Hire purchase lets a company take on new orders with the right machine while spreading the cost, instead of tying up the cash it needs for materials and wages.

  3. Tax relief can also help. Companies can claim full expensing on qualifying new main-rate plant and machinery, and assets bought on hire purchase are generally treated as bought for capital allowances. A permanent 40% first-year allowance has also applied since 1 January 2026. Your accountant can confirm what applies to your business.

Business Hire Purchase in Birmingham: questions

Can a Birmingham engineering firm finance a used CNC machine?

Often, yes. Lenders look at the machine's age, make and likely resale value, and may ask for a dealer valuation or an inspection. Well-known brands from reputable dealers are usually easier to fund. Very old or bespoke equipment may attract a shorter term or need a larger deposit, and the lender makes the final decision, subject to status.

Can hire purchase terms be matched to an automotive or aerospace supply contract?

Usually. Many lenders offer terms of one to seven years, so setting the agreement to run alongside a three or five-year supply contract is often possible. The lender will still want to see that the business can afford the payments if the contract is not renewed, so other customers and recent accounts matter too.

Can installation, tooling and training be included when we finance a new machine?

Some lenders will include these soft costs, typically up to a proportion of the total, as long as the main asset is a recognised machine with a resale value. Larger amounts of software, tooling or building work may need a separate facility. A supplier quote that breaks down each cost helps the lender assess the request.

Can a Jewellery Quarter workshop use hire purchase for laser welders or casting equipment?

Yes, a jewellery manufacturer trading as a limited company, LLP or partnership of four or more partners can apply. Laser welders, casting machines, CAD and 3D printing equipment and polishing systems are all assets lenders recognise. Smaller items can sometimes be grouped into one agreement so the business has a single monthly payment.

Does a West Midlands manufacturer need to own its premises to get hire purchase?

No. Many engineering and fabrication firms in Birmingham and the Black Country rent their units, and the machine itself is usually the main security. A lender may ask for the landlord's details or a waiver so it can recover the asset if needed. Credit checks are carried out when a full application is made.
