How London companies use unsecured business loans
A large share of London's smaller companies rent their premises, run on laptops and cloud software, and own very little that a lender could take as security. That is why unsecured borrowing is so often the first conversation for a consultancy in the City, a software studio near Old Street or a design agency in Clerkenwell. Instead of a charge over property, lenders look at turnover, bank statements, trading record and the credit profile of the business and its directors, and most will want a personal guarantee. Sums from around £5,000 to £500,000 over one to six years are possible. The first thing we check is whether recent bank statements show enough headroom for the repayments, because affordability is a common reason for decline. Our registered office is on Great Portland Street, London W1. We work with London clients by phone, email and chat, starting with a 60-second eligibility check that won't affect your credit score.

Unsecured borrowing for London's asset-light companies
London had 552,505 VAT or PAYE registered enterprises in 2026, and 90.1% of them were micro businesses with fewer than ten staff. Many work in sectors that own little physical security. Professional, scientific and technical activities account for 14.4% of the capital's jobs and information and communication for 9.6%, against 9.5% and 4.4% across the UK (Nomis, June 2026). A consultancy or software studio usually rents its space and runs on laptops, so lenders look instead at turnover, bank statements and credit history, and most ask directors for a personal guarantee.

Demand for finance is broad. Around half of smaller UK businesses seek external finance, and use of flexible finance increased in 2025. For a London company, an unsecured loan is often used to hire ahead of a contract, fit out new offices or fund a marketing push, with the lender assessing whether repayments fit comfortably alongside London salaries and rent.

Unsecured Business Loans in London: questions
Can a London company that rents its offices get an unsecured business loan?
Yes, owning premises is not a requirement for unsecured lending. Lenders mainly look at turnover, profitability, bank statements and credit history, and most ask directors for a personal guarantee. Whether a particular company is approved, and on what terms, is always the lender's decision and subject to status.
Our London company earns much of its income from overseas clients. Will lenders consider it?
Many will, provided the money arrives in a UK business bank account and shows a steady pattern. Lenders may look more closely at currency swings, client concentration and payment terms. Clear management accounts that separate UK and overseas income can make the assessment easier.
Can we use an unsecured loan to fund a deposit and fit-out on new London offices?
Often, yes. Rent deposits, furniture, cabling and meeting-room technology are common reasons London firms borrow unsecured. Lenders will want to see that the business can afford both the higher rent and the loan repayments, so a simple forecast showing the move's effect on cash flow helps.
Will our London salary bill affect how much we can borrow?
It can. Lenders judge affordability from what is left after regular costs, and London payroll and rent can take a large share of turnover. Two firms with the same sales may receive different offers if one has much higher fixed costs. Recent bank statements usually show lenders this clearly.
Can Grow London Local help us before we apply for a loan?
It can be a useful first step. Grow London Local offers free business support, including help with money and planning, though it does not lend itself. Preparing up-to-date accounts and a short forecast first usually makes a later loan application clearer for lenders, who make the final decision.
