How Manchester companies use business hire purchase
Two very different kinds of equipment are common in Greater Manchester. In the manufacturing towns around the city, including Oldham, Bolton and Rochdale, textile, packaging, food and engineering businesses need production lines, forklifts and industrial machinery. At MediaCityUK in Salford, production companies and post-houses need cameras, lighting rigs, LED volumes and editing systems that can date quickly. Asset finance can serve both, spreading costs over one to seven years on hire purchase for kit the company plans to keep, or on a lease for equipment it expects to replace. The asset normally stands as the lender's security, and funding from around £5,000 to £1 million is possible. Refurbished and used equipment can often be included. Welcome Finance compares lenders, including some that specialise in broadcast or industrial assets.

Why Greater Manchester manufacturers use hire purchase
Manufacturing employed around 87,700 people across Greater Manchester in December 2024, about 6.6% of the city region's jobs. Food producers in Trafford Park, packaging and textile firms in Oldham and Rochdale, and engineering companies in Bolton and Wigan all rely on machinery that is costly to replace. The Greater Manchester Investment Zone is adding £160 million of public funding over 10 years for advanced materials and manufacturing, which should mean more supply-chain work for local firms.

Plans to invest are holding up. In the Greater Manchester Business Index for September 2026, 39% of firms expected to increase capital expenditure in the year ahead, and manufacturing and engineering was among the most optimistic sectors. Hire purchase lets a company spread that spending over the working life of a machine, with the asset usually acting as the lender's security, so cash stays available for materials and wages.
There is a tax point too. Companies can claim full expensing on qualifying new main-rate plant and machinery, and assets on hire purchase are generally treated as bought for capital allowances. Your accountant can confirm how this applies to a particular purchase.

Business Hire Purchase in Manchester: questions
Can a Salford production company finance kit for a single broadcast commission?
Often, yes. Lenders that fund cameras, lighting and post-production kit at MediaCityUK will look at your track record of commissions as well as the new one. Because this equipment can lose value quickly, terms are usually kept shorter, and some companies choose a lease instead if they expect to replace the kit when the commission ends.
Can a Trafford Park food manufacturer include installation costs in a hire purchase deal?
Some lenders will fund delivery, installation and commissioning alongside the machine itself, particularly on production and packing lines. These costs have no resale value, so lenders typically cap how much of the total they will cover. A detailed supplier quote that separates the equipment from the installation work helps the lender decide.
Can an Oldham or Rochdale textile firm finance machinery imported from overseas?
Yes, imported machinery can usually be funded, but lenders are more careful when the supplier is abroad. They may pay the supplier in stages or only once the machine has arrived and been installed, and import VAT and shipping costs need planning. Agreeing the payment arrangements with the lender before ordering avoids delays.
Do manufacturers on Greater Manchester Investment Zone sites get special finance terms?
No. Investment Zone public funding is separate from commercial finance, and lenders assess each company in the usual way, looking at accounts, trading history and the asset. Grants or other public support can sit alongside hire purchase, so it is worth checking what is available before deciding how much of a purchase to finance.
Can we get an indication of hire purchase costs before committing to a new contract?
Yes. A broker can usually obtain indicative terms from a supplier quote and recent accounts, which helps when pricing a contract or deciding between machines. These are not offers. Credit checks happen when a full application is made, and approval is subject to status and the lender's decision.
