Local insight

How Birmingham companies use vehicle & fleet finance

With the M5, M6, M42 and M40 all close by, Birmingham sits in the middle of the Midlands logistics belt, and the region is full of hauliers, distribution businesses and parcel operators running tractor units, rigids and vans. Vehicle finance lets those companies grow or renew their fleet without handing over large deposits. Agreements lasting between one and seven years, whether hire purchase, a finance lease or contract hire, can cover everything from a single Luton van to multiple HGVs with trailers. The vehicles normally act as security, leaving other assets free for other borrowing. The city's Clean Air Zone charges non-compliant vans and lorries entering the centre, so some operators are bringing forward replacements. Welcome Finance works with West Midlands fleets by phone and video, comparing lenders experienced with commercial vehicles.

Typical examples

Where it helps in Birmingham

  • 01

Adding tractor units for a new contract

A haulier near the M6 at Castle Bromwich adds three tractor units on hire purchase to service a new retail distribution contract.

  • 02

    Clean Air Zone upgrade

A building supplies firm delivering into central Birmingham replaces older tipper trucks with vehicles that meet Clean Air Zone standards.

  • 03

Van fleet for a facilities company

A facilities maintenance company in Erdington puts twelve vans on contract hire so servicing and replacement cycles are predictable.

The process

How it works

  1. 01

    Pick your vehicles

Choose the vehicles you need from a dealer or supplier and get a quote, including any modifications.

  2. 02

    Compare finance options

We look at hire purchase, finance lease and contract hire across suitable lenders and explain the trade-offs.

  3. 03

    Approval and paperwork

The lender checks the vehicles, runs credit checks on the company and its directors, and assesses affordability. Younger companies may be asked for a deposit or a director’s personal guarantee.

  4. 04

    Take delivery

Once the company signs, the lender pays the dealer, you take delivery and the company makes fixed monthly payments over the agreed term.

Vans, HGVs and the Birmingham Clean Air Zone

  1. Birmingham has become a busier place to run vehicles. Employment in warehousing and transport support activities in the city rose by about 64% to 11,500 in 2024, and land transport employment rose by about 16% to 11,000. At the same time the number of transport and storage businesses fell by 4.9% between 2023 and 2024, so more work is being shared among fewer firms, and those operators need fleets they can rely on.

  2. The city's Clean Air Zone adds a direct cost to older vehicles. Since June 2021, non-compliant vans have paid £8 a day to drive in the zone and HGVs £50 a day. For a haulier or trade business making daily deliveries into the city centre, those charges build up quickly over a year, which is why many operators replace older vehicles using hire purchase, finance leases or contract hire.

  3. For vans and lorries bought on hire purchase, companies may be able to claim capital allowances. Full expensing covers qualifying new main-rate plant and machinery, though cars are excluded. Your accountant can confirm how this applies to each vehicle.

Vehicle & Fleet Finance in Birmingham: questions

Can a Birmingham haulage company finance used HGVs?

Many lenders fund used HGVs and trailers within age and mileage limits, particularly recognised makes with good resale values. The company's operator licence, maintenance records and trading history usually form part of the assessment. Older units may be offered a shorter term, and approval is always the lender's decision, subject to status.

Does vehicle finance help with Birmingham's Clean Air Zone?

It can spread the cost of replacing vans and lorries that do not meet the zone's standards, so a business is not paying daily charges while saving up for new vehicles. Checking that a specific vehicle is compliant before buying remains the company's responsibility, and lenders can fund both new and used compliant vehicles.

Can a West Midlands delivery company finance electric vans and charging points together?

Some lenders will fund electric vans and depot charging equipment in one package, while others treat the chargers separately. Lenders often look at the expected range against your routes and at the residual value of the vehicles. Contract hire can suit companies that want to hand vans back as battery technology improves.

Can we finance specialist bodies such as tippers, refrigerated units or tail-lifts?

Usually, yes. Building supplies firms, food distributors and removals companies across Birmingham often need bodywork fitted to a standard chassis. Lenders can typically include the body conversion in the same agreement, though highly bespoke builds may need a larger deposit because they are harder to resell.

Our main contract is with one distribution centre near the M6. Will lenders see that as a risk?

They may. Lenders look at how much of your income comes from one customer and how long the contract runs. Showing the contract terms, the length of the relationship and any other work you do can help. Matching the finance term to the contract length is often sensible, and the lender decides on the final terms.
