Local insight

How Glasgow companies use vehicle & fleet finance

Glasgow is the transport hub for much of the west of Scotland, with haulage and distribution firms running routes up the A82, along the M8 corridor and down the M74 to England. Construction contractors, trades and facilities businesses across the city also rely on vans and specialist vehicles. Vehicle finance allows these companies to spread the cost of vans, trucks and trailers over one to seven years, whether through hire purchase, finance lease or contract hire. The vehicle generally acts as security. Glasgow's Low Emission Zone has been enforced in the city centre since June 2023, so operators with older diesel vans and lorries have been replacing them sooner than planned. Welcome Finance compares commercial vehicle lenders that lend in Scotland, and Glasgow operators can complete the process with us by phone and online.

Typical examples

Where it helps in Glasgow

  • 01

    Low Emission Zone upgrade

A Glasgow plumbing and heating firm replaces older vans with compliant models to keep working in the city centre.

  • 02

    Trucks for a haulage contract

A haulier based near the M8 adds rigid trucks on hire purchase to service a new distribution contract.

  • 03

Specialist vehicles for a construction firm

A civil engineering contractor in Lanarkshire funds tippers and crew vans for a road project.

The process

How it works

  1. 01

    Pick your vehicles

Choose the vehicles you need from a dealer or supplier and get a quote, including any modifications.

  2. 02

    Compare finance options

We look at hire purchase, finance lease and contract hire across suitable lenders and explain the trade-offs.

  3. 03

    Approval and paperwork

The lender checks the vehicles, runs credit checks on the company and its directors, and assesses affordability. Younger companies may be asked for a deposit or a director’s personal guarantee.

  4. 04

    Take delivery

Once the company signs, the lender pays the dealer, you take delivery and the company makes fixed monthly payments over the agreed term.

Glasgow's Low Emission Zone and the cost of replacing vans and lorries

  1. Glasgow's Low Emission Zone has been enforced in the city centre since 1 June 2023. Diesel vans must meet Euro 6 and lorries Euro VI, and cameras detect non-compliant vehicles. The penalty charge starts at £60 and rises with each further breach, up to £480 for vans and £960 for HGVs. Plumbers, electricians, couriers and facilities firms that drive into the centre every day have had to replace older diesel vehicles sooner than planned.

  2. Glasgow is also the logistics centre for a region of about 1.89 million people, nearly a third of Scotland's population, with two international airports. Hauliers and distributors serving it along the M8, M74 and M80 run large numbers of rigid trucks, tractor units and trailers, and those vehicles are typically replaced on a cycle of a few years.

  3. Vehicle finance spreads these costs, through hire purchase, finance lease or contract hire, with the vehicle usually acting as security. The tax treatment differs by vehicle: hire purchase assets are generally treated as bought for capital allowances, but cars are excluded from full expensing, so it is worth asking your accountant how a van, lorry or car will be treated before choosing between buying and leasing.

Vehicle & Fleet Finance in Glasgow: questions

Can a Glasgow company finance vehicles to meet Low Emission Zone rules?

Yes. Vehicle finance can spread the cost of replacing diesel vans below Euro 6 or lorries below Euro VI. Checking that a vehicle meets the standard remains the company's responsibility, so confirm its Euro emissions standard with the dealer and check the council's LEZ guidance before you sign.

Do vehicle finance lenders lend to Scottish companies?

Many do, but not all. Some lenders are less active in Scotland or have different requirements for Scottish companies. We approach lenders that regularly fund limited companies, LLPs and larger partnerships north of the border, which avoids wasted applications and unnecessary credit searches.

Does the Low Emission Zone affect which used vehicles lenders will finance?

It can. Older diesel vans and lorries that cannot enter the zone without a penalty are often worth less in Glasgow and harder to resell, so lenders may offer shorter terms or lower amounts on them. A compliant used vehicle is usually easier to finance than a cheaper non-compliant one.

Can a Glasgow food distributor finance refrigerated vehicles?

Usually, yes. Refrigerated vans and temperature-controlled trailers from established builders are widely financed, typically on hire purchase or finance lease. Lenders may treat the body and fridge unit separately from the chassis, so expect questions about the specification, the supplier and the expected working life of the equipment.

We are based in Lanarkshire or Renfrewshire rather than Glasgow itself. Does that change anything?

No. Lenders look at the company, its accounts and the vehicles, not which council area it sits in. A haulier in Motherwell, Paisley or Clydebank applies in the same way as one in Glasgow, and we handle the whole process by phone, email and video.
