How Liverpool companies use unsecured business loans

Liverpool's digital economy has deep roots in games development, and today the Baltic Triangle and the Knowledge Quarter host studios, agencies and health technology firms whose main assets are people and intellectual property. For established companies like these, an unsecured business loan can provide between £5,000 and £500,000 over one to six years without a charge over equipment or premises. Typical uses include funding a development team through the final stage of a project, building a sales function or moving into bigger offices. The city's law firms, accountants and consultancies use unsecured borrowing in similar ways, often to invest in technology or new service lines. Lenders will concentrate on trading history, profitability and bank statements, and usually ask directors for personal guarantees. We work with Merseyside companies by phone or video; checking eligibility takes about a minute and won't affect your credit score.

Unsecured loans for Liverpool's knowledge and creative firms

  1. Many of Liverpool's growing companies own little that a lender could take as security. In 2023 financial, professional and business services produced £6.3 billion of output across the city region and employed about 96,000 people, creative industries produced £1.2 billion with about 15,000 jobs, and life sciences output reached £1.0 billion after growing 53% over five years. The region's games heritage goes back to the 1980s and the studio Psygnosis. For law firms, agencies, studios and health technology firms, the main assets are people, software and know-how, which is where an unsecured business loan can fit.

  2. Lenders are careful, though. At 47%, the city region has the lowest three-year business survival rate of the mayoral combined authority areas, so lenders usually set minimum trading periods, look closely at filed accounts and bank statements, and ask directors for personal guarantees. Nationally, around half of smaller businesses seek external finance, and companies with a record of profitable trading are usually in a stronger position.

Unsecured Business Loans in Liverpool: questions

Can a Liverpool games studio with milestone-based income borrow unsecured?

It is possible, but lenders look closely at how predictable income is. A studio with several released titles, regular publisher or work-for-hire payments and filed accounts showing profit is better placed than one relying on a single upcoming release. Lenders set their own minimum trading periods, and some prefer two years of filed accounts for larger amounts.

We are a life sciences company in the Knowledge Quarter with grant income. Will lenders count it?

Lenders usually focus on trading income from customers and contracts. Grant income may be taken into account, but it is often given less weight because it can be one-off or tied to specific spending. A company with recurring revenue from research services, licences or product sales alongside grants typically has a stronger case. Lenders decide, subject to status.

Can a Liverpool law firm or accountancy LLP borrow without members giving guarantees?

Unsecured lenders usually ask members of an LLP, or partners in a partnership of four or more partners, for personal guarantees, in the same way they ask company directors. Some lenders limit the guarantee to a share of the loan or accept guarantees from a few senior members. It is worth reading the guarantee terms carefully and taking legal advice.

Can we use an unsecured loan to fit out a bigger office in the Baltic Triangle?

Yes, office moves and fit-outs are a common use. Lenders may ask for quotes and an outline of how the move supports growth, such as new hires. Remember that rent deposits and fit-out costs come at the same time, so it helps to check your landlord's lease terms and cash flow before choosing the loan amount and term.

Should we speak to the LCR Finance Hub or a finance broker?

They do different jobs, and many companies use both. The LCR Finance Hub is a free, publicly funded service that can point Liverpool City Region businesses to grants, programmes and funding options. A broker such as Welcome Finance compares commercial lenders for a specific loan, at no fee to you because the lender pays a commission.
