How Glasgow companies use invoice finance
Many Glasgow businesses sell to larger organisations on extended payment terms: engineering subcontractors to main contractors and shipyards, facilities management companies to public and private clients, and creative or technology agencies to corporate customers. Waiting 30, 60 or even 90 days for payment ties up cash that could be spent on wages or materials. Invoice finance releases a proportion of each approved invoice, often 80–90%, soon after issue, and pays the remaining balance, minus fees, once the customer pays. Facilities increase as sales grow. Scots law used to require each customer to be notified before invoices could be assigned, which complicated confidential discounting; since April 2025 assignations can be registered instead, though lenders still vary in how they handle Scottish ledgers. Invoice finance and assignation of debts for Glasgow suppliers
Large employers play an outsized role in Glasgow. As at March 2025, small and medium-sized businesses accounted for only 36.8% of private sector employment in Glasgow City. Engineering subcontractors, facilities firms, IT providers and recruitment agencies that supply these larger organisations often wait 30 to 60 days or more to be paid, and invoice finance releases a proportion of each approved invoice soon after it is issued.

Scots law used to make this harder, because each customer had to be formally told before a debt could be assigned. Since 1 April 2025, the Moveable Transactions (Scotland) Act 2023 has allowed an assignation to be completed by registration in a new register or by electronic intimation, which significantly streamlines the process. Lenders still vary in how they handle Scottish ledgers, so it pays to compare them.

Late payment interest also applies here. In Scotland, a supplier has five years to claim statutory interest, set at 8% above the Bank of England's rate. In March 2026 the UK government confirmed plans for a 60-day ceiling on payment terms when larger businesses buy from smaller suppliers, though these are not expected before 2027. Invoice Finance in Glasgow: questions
Is invoice finance available to Scottish companies?
Yes. Many lenders offer factoring and invoice discounting to Scottish limited companies, LLPs and partnerships of four or more partners. Since April 2025, invoices can be assigned by registration in the Register of Assignations, although some lenders still use older trust-based structures for Scottish ledgers.
Do we have to tell each customer before assigning invoices in Scotland?
Not any more, in most cases. Under the Moveable Transactions (Scotland) Act 2023, an assignation can be registered instead of formally notifying every customer, which makes confidential invoice discounting more practical. Whether your facility is disclosed or confidential is still the lender's decision, based on your turnover, credit control and the quality of your ledger.
Can a Glasgow construction subcontractor use invoice finance?
Sometimes. Applications for payment, retentions and set-off make construction invoices harder to fund, so many lenders exclude them. A few specialist lenders do fund construction ledgers in Scotland, and a business loan or asset finance can be alternatives for subcontractors.
Can we fund invoices to Glasgow City Council or NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde?
Often, yes. Public bodies tend to pay reliably, which lenders like. Check your contract for any clause that restricts assigning the debt, because some public and corporate contracts include one. Lenders may also limit how much of the facility relies on a single customer.
Can a Glasgow facilities management company use invoice finance to cover payroll?
Yes, this is a common use. Cleaning, security and maintenance firms usually pay staff weekly or monthly but invoice clients on 30 days or more. A facility advances cash as invoices are raised, so it can grow alongside new contracts, subject to the lender's approval of each customer.
