How Glasgow companies use working capital

Trade in Glasgow has a strong seasonal rhythm. Retailers on Buchanan Street and in the Merchant City depend on Christmas, hospitality businesses gear up for summer events and festivals, and firms supplying the city's conference and concert venues see demand bunch around major bookings. Engineering subcontractors along the Clyde face their own timing issues, buying materials early and waiting for stage payments. Working capital finance helps companies like these cover wages, stock and supplier bills when cash is temporarily short. Sums of £5,000 upwards, to a ceiling of roughly £500,000, are usually cleared within two years and are judged mainly on bank statements, accounts and recent trading. Some UK funders do not lend in Scotland, so we concentrate on those that do. We arrange Glasgow facilities by phone and online, setting out costs and any personal guarantee before you agree.

Big events, contracts and working capital in Glasgow

  1. Glasgow's trade often comes in surges. The city hosted the Commonwealth Games from 23 July to 2 August 2026, with about 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories, and the Scottish Government expected more than £150 million of economic benefit. Caterers, hotels, security firms and event suppliers had to pay for staff, stock and equipment weeks before that income arrived, and the city's concert, conference and festival calendar creates the same pattern on a smaller scale every year.

  2. Contract timing matters too. Most firms in the region are small: 87% of Glasgow City Region businesses employ fewer than 10 people, while large employers provide 43% of the region's jobs. Smaller suppliers to those large organisations often buy materials and pay wages long before they are paid. Working capital finance is designed to bridge that kind of gap, typically over terms of up to two years, with lenders judging applications mainly on recent trading, bank statements and accounts.

Working Capital in Glasgow: questions

Can a Glasgow company access working capital from lenders based in England?

Yes. Many lenders lend across the UK, including to Scottish limited companies, LLPs and larger partnerships. Some have different requirements north of the border, or do not lend in Scotland at all, so it is worth comparing lenders that are active here before applying.

Can working capital cover our costs ahead of a large event at the SEC or the Hydro?

It can, if the company has an established trading record. Lenders will want to see your bank statements and accounts, and it helps to show the booking or contract and when you expect to be paid. Short terms are common for event-related borrowing, so plan repayments around when the income actually lands.

We supply a large public body in Glasgow that pays on 30 days, but our costs fall earlier. Which option suits us?

If the gap comes from unpaid invoices, invoice finance releases cash against those invoices as you raise them. If the money is needed before you can invoice, for materials or extra staff, a working capital loan is usually more suitable. Some companies use both, and lenders will look at each request on its merits.

Can a Glasgow city centre retailer borrow for Christmas stock and repay in the new year?

Yes, this is a common use. Lenders typically look at the previous year's trading, including how quickly stock sold over the festive period. Short terms of six to twelve months are often used for seasonal stock, and repayments may be fixed or, with some products, linked to sales.

Is it worth speaking to Business Gateway as well?

Yes. Business Gateway gives free advice to Scottish businesses, including one-to-one help with planning and growth. It does not usually lend money itself, but a well-prepared cash flow forecast and plan can make your finance application clearer and help you decide how much to borrow.
