How this calculator works

The calculator uses standard amortisation: each monthly repayment is the same, and covers interest on the balance still owed plus part of the capital. Early repayments are mostly interest; later ones are mostly capital.

It does not include arrangement fees, broker fees or early repayment charges. Lenders set these separately, and they must be shown to you before you commit, so compare the total cost of each offer, not just the rate.

Read the monthly repayment first, because that is what your cash flow has to carry every month. Then look at total interest and total repayable, which show what the money really costs over the whole term. A lower monthly figure is not always the better choice: stretching the term usually lowers the repayment but raises the total interest, so try the same amount over two or three terms before deciding.

For illustration only: £100,000 at an example 10% a year costs about £3,227 a month over 36 months, with around £16,160 of interest. Over 60 months the repayment drops to about £2,125, but total interest rises to around £27,480. Neither is right or wrong; the question is which repayment your company can comfortably afford while still leaving headroom for quieter months.

Lenders usually look at recent filed accounts, management accounts, business bank statements, existing debt and the credit history of the company and its directors. When you compare real offers, put every cost side by side: the rate, any arrangement fee, whether a fee is deducted from the amount paid out, and any early repayment charge. The calculator assumes a fixed rate and equal repayments, so a variable rate or a repayment holiday will give different figures.

Business loan calculator: common questions

How accurate is a business loan calculator?

The maths is exact for a fixed-rate, fixed-term loan with equal monthly repayments. What varies is the rate: it depends on your company’s accounts, credit history, security and the lender, so treat the result as a guide until you see a real offer.

Will using the calculator affect my credit score?

No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser and nothing is saved or searched. Our 60-second eligibility check doesn’t affect your credit score either; lenders only run their own checks if you choose to proceed.

Do lenders ask for a personal guarantee?

Most unsecured business lenders ask directors or LLP members to sign one. It means you could be personally liable if the company can’t repay, so take independent legal advice before signing.

How much would a £50,000 business loan cost?

It depends on the rate, the term and any fees, which vary between lenders and with your company’s circumstances. Enter £50,000 with a few example rates and terms to see the range of monthly repayments and total interest, then ask each lender for the total amount repayable, including fees, so you can compare like with like.

Is a longer loan term better?

A longer term usually means a lower monthly repayment, which can ease cash flow, but you pay interest for longer, so the total cost is normally higher. A shorter term costs less overall but needs more headroom each month. Many companies choose the shortest term they can comfortably afford, with room to spare for slower trading periods.

Can I repay a business loan early?

Often, yes, but terms vary. Some lenders charge an early repayment fee, or a set number of months’ interest, so settling early may save less than you expect. Check the settlement terms before you sign, and ask for a written settlement figure before you repay early.

What is the difference between a secured and an unsecured business loan?

A secured loan is backed by a specific asset the lender can claim if the loan isn’t repaid. An unsecured business loan has no specific asset as security, although lenders usually ask directors for a personal guarantee. Security can affect the amount, rate and term on offer, depending on the lender.
